Proper Racking & Why It Matters

The end of January was an eventful one for ARCA. We made way for more projects, plans, and most importantly people. It took a day and a half to complete –12 working hours– and was completed by 4 team members.

The team had to clear out the existing area which was full of projects in progress. With 2,500 square feet of space, they wanted to ensure it was done right. This involved moving lots of pallets and heavy boxes. Clearing up any scraps and dirt living beneath everything was essential to making sure the space was safe and clean.

Aside from the obvious reason that more space is needed, why is proper racking so important?

  • It increases the safety of our workers.
    • When they need to find something, they don’t need to go around obstacles to get there.
    • When they need to get through, which is especially crucial during an emergency that involves an evacuation.
  • It protects our inventory.
    • Having the proper equipment ensures all items, big or small, are stored effectively and safely. No items should be hanging off or even worse, falling from the shelves and breaking, potentially injuring a team member. This ensures the items customers order are in the condition they’re supposed to be.
  • It optimizes the management of warehouse operations.
    • When all items have an actual designated home within the warehouse, coordinating projects, and bringing in new while removing older things becomes simpler and just part of the day-to-day process. This leads to a faster intake and shelving system, which means products can be ordered and shipped to customers quickly.

Once the area was clear and ready to go, the racking went up. Making sure our warehouse is utilized as effectively and efficiently as possible is a critical piece to providing our staff with a safe working environment. Providing flawless and fast service to our customers is something we strive for every day, and this is just one step toward achieving that.
